Mason often looks slightly... disheveled. His head is in the clouds, and he puts more thought into the book he just read than into brushing his hair. He might have a pen behind each ear at any given time, and still not know where he put them.
He doesn’t have any particular rebellious need to buck the dress code, but he’s never dressed quite right regardless. Maybe he missed a button or maybe his socks don't match, but he never looks put together. Out of dress code, his saving grace is that he dresses simply. He favors clever t-shirts, blue jeans, and sneakers. Sometimes, depending on the weather, he layers on button down shirts and/or jackets. That’s about as fancy as he gets.

personality
LIKES: Friendly debates. Scifi and fantasy genres. Creative writing. Cheeseburgers. New pens. Old book smell. Video games. Comic books. Super hero characters. Trying new foods. Ketchup. 50's music.
DISLIKES: Competitive sports. Closed-minded people. Fashion??? Interpersonal drama. Following rules just because they're rules. Nonfiction books. Tomatoes. Cleaning. Losing to-do lists. Country music. Rigorous grammar rules.
Mason is endlessly inquisitive and open minded, though often unfocused in his interests. He is willing to entertain any unlikely theory, dubious hypothesis, or doubtful theorem, at least for as long as his curiosity holds out. He loves to discuss things at length, drawn to friendly in-depth debates about everything from dark matter to who the best Star Trek captain is (it’s Picard). Mason is full of enthusiasm for the topics and people that interest him, while they interest him. When someone shares his love of a book or a show or a video game, he will happily chatter at them, regardless of whether they seem like they want to be chattered to. He’s a little oblivious to social cues that way, and while he’s certainly friendly, this also makes him a little awkward. His curiosity, however, leads him like something shiny through the woods, and he will quickly become intensely interested in a subject, and just as quickly abandon it, which sometimes leaves people reeling and wondering what to talk to him about when last month’s obsession is this month’s distant memory.
Emotionally, Mason always comes off as level and calm. Nothing ever seems to surprise him. His brother’s ex boyfriend is their step brother now? Makes sense. Shadow monsters and a fight for the fate of the world? Okay. Near strangers are now grouped together to form squads and protect each other from death? Sure. He tries to approach everything rationally, parsing things out with logic instead of gut feelings. He seems to passively accept everything that’s presented to him - not without questions, he has a lot of questions! - and go with the flow. He isn’t the fastest to react, even if he sees a problem coming a mile away. He takes his time to collect data, analyze it, and formulate a measured response.
In truth, Mason worries about everything all the time, from the little things to the huge ones. He constantly has a buzz of anxious thoughts swarming in his brain like bees. He just can’t seem to muster any big emotional response. It’s like people who wear ankle and wrist weights as they go about their daily lives to build up strength, except with emotions. By being constantly at least a little worried, he has built up a tolerance. Or maybe it’s less like strength training and more like muscle fatigue, and he’s just too tired to work up a response. Either way, he constantly overthinks, constantly trying to reason his way through problems that haven’t even happened yet, but has the outward appearance of being totally unflappable.
Ultimately, though, Mason is an optimist. Though he might fret over a lot of things, he expects that, in the long run, things will work out for the best one way or another. His test will go okay, he’ll find his glasses, and the world definitely won’t end. Maybe this is because there has always been someone there to look out for him. Whether it was his dad, his aunt, Flint, or now Farida, Mason has always been surrounded by people who want to ensure the best for him, and he has never really seen any reason to resist their well meaning care. Most of the time, he barely notices. It isn’t that he isn’t grateful, just that he’s so used to being babied.
It’s a good thing people want to take care of him, too, because Mason is scatterbrained and forgetful. Without someone to remind him, he’ll forget to eat breakfast and walk out with two mismatched socks or none at all. His living space is always the cluttered kind of messy of someone who insists that they know where everything is, but can’t seem to produce items on command. If he remembered there was homework to do, he doesn’t know where he put it. He makes to-do lists and then he makes lists of lists, pinning them up and sticking them in between the pages of books. He is always finding balled up wads of paper in his pocket after his clothes are washed and hoping they weren’t important.
TL;DR: Friendly, Enthusiastic, Open-minded, Optimistic, Calm, Logical, Forgetful, Scatterbrained, Messy, Anxious
abilities
★★★★ Creative Writing: Mason loves to write, and he has a natural talent for it. Unfortunately for his grades, he prefers writing fiction. He can focus for hours on writing a sprawling super hero epic, but has little interest in that history essay due this week.
★★★☆ Crack Shot: Mason has fantastic aim. Whether it’s an arrow or a wadded up paper into a wastebasket, Mason rarely misses. While he may take a little longer to line up a shot, it’s worth it. That is, so long as he doesn’t lose or break his glasses. Then he's useless.
★★☆☆ Drawing: He has the kind of skill that makes people who don’t draw say, “Hey, that’s pretty good!” Mostly, he’s a chronic doodler and sometimes fan artist. With dedicated practice, he could probably become genuinely skilled, but it’s the “dedicated” part that’s the trouble.
★★☆☆ Cooking: Mason was basically raised in a diner, and he’s no stranger to the kitchen. However, while he can handle burgers, fries, club sandwiches, scrambled eggs, pancakes, milkshakes, and other simple, quickly cooked meals, that’s about it. He knows how to work a stove or a grill, but if he feeds himself at home, it’s ramen noodles and peanut butter sandwiches.
history
FAMILY:
- Jackson Chambers, father. Owns and operates Monroe's Place, a well loved diner in their home town.
- Leanne Chambers, mother. Died of cancer when Mason was four.
- Farida Chambers (formerly Valentine), stepmother Arabic translator for various publishing companies.
- Flint Chambers, older brother. Senior at Finchwood Academy.
- Briony Chambers, younger sister. Middle school student.
- Neal Valentine, older stepbrother. Junior at Finchwood Academy.
- Clarice Chambers (formerly Valentine), younger stepsister. Middle school student.
- Grace Mortensen, aunt. Younger sister of Jackson. Aunt Grace and her husband helped care for Mason and his siblings for a year and a half after their mother died. After that, they moved back to New York, but she still texts Mason to check up on him.
HOMETOWN: Hillsborough, NC
CHILDHOOD. Mason doesn’t have many memories of his mother before she got sick, and he can’t even be certain that the ones he has aren’t just constructions recreated from other people’s recollections. His earliest definite memories of his family are the reality created after his mother died. His dad, throwing himself back into work. His aunt moving in to help take care of them. Flint, running after him and his sister to make sure he was taken care of and safe. There was always someone well meaning nearby to see to Mason’s needs.
When a new family moved into town, everyone suddenly had new friends. Their father made friends with Farida Elsharkawy, Flint made friends with Neal, and Briony became friends with Clarice. Though the families became inseparable, there was no one Mason’s age. He wasn’t bitter, though. He found that he could easily tag along with Flint and Neal or Briony and Clarice, and when either pair wouldn’t stand for a third wheel, Mason was able to occupy himself. For the first time, there were moments when no one was paying attention to Mason, and honestly, that suited him fine. He was a quiet boy who didn’t get into trouble when left to his own devices. He would dive into a television show or a new book
That’s generally how things went for Mason at school, too. When something piqued his interest, his enthusiasm would bubble over, and he would throw himself into the project or class or discussion with gusto. Otherwise, he was quiet and mostly forgettable. He did well in his classes, but not astoundingly so. He didn’t cause trouble and he didn’t need extra help from his teachers. Mostly, adults just commented on what a good boy he was.
FINCHWOOD ACADEMY. When Flint announced his intention to follow in Neal’s footsteps and apply for Finchwood Academy, Mason said he wanted to apply as well. He’s still not sure exactly why. Was he curious about going somewhere other than their own small town? Interested in pushing his own limits? Or was he just afraid of what he would do without Flint? He’s still content to not dwell on it too much.
Mason took the discovery of Finchwood’s true purpose in stride. He had already seen enough to consider it proven, so there was no reason to doubt it. Besides, teenagers chosen for a grander purpose played right into all the fantasy tropes he had been reading and watching for years. It was so cool and he excitedly signed the contract.
The next year, though, was hard. Unfortunately, there was no training montage that ended with Mason being a ripped badass. While he was jubilant at the opportunity to learn actual magic, he didn’t take to combat training physically or mentally. He had never so much as thrown a punch in his life. And, honestly, he continues to be shocked that his Persona isn’t one of the Support types. He’s sure he would be a natural, supporting the cause from behind the scene with his keen observation skills. Could someone have made a mistake?

GENERAL PERFORMANCE: Mason is a natural at school. He’s intelligent, likes to learn, and synthesizes information easily. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always translate to perfect grades. He likes to learn, but he wants to learn what he wants to learn, which sometimes translates to him reading unrelated books in class. Additionally, he tends to forget things: homework, where he left his textbooks, upcoming tests. He still makes good grades, B’s with a couple of A’s, but he could certainly do better.
